Bases & lids
Solidus offers various sizes of paper-based 4-point packaging, consisting of a base and lid, tailored to fit a large range of food and beverage products.
Meat and poultry are packaged chilled or frozen and often in humid environment. A solid board box is robust and compact and retains its maximum strength even under humid conditions. Your product also freezes much faster when packed in paper-based board, making it an excellent choice for meat packaging.
Solid board packaging supplied with a PE liner is suitable for direct food contact, at the same time it meets all the requirements regarding hygiene and food safety. Our boxes are designed to meet up to all physical requirements of the supply chain to ensure your product arrives in optimal condition.
The meat packaging will be fully fitted to your logistics process, whether it is manual or (semi) automatic, or whether it involves loose products or products packed in primary packaging, cooled or frozen.

There are a lot of different types of meat that require packaging. This ranges from raw meat to processed meat products and it can include farmed, organic and wild meat and poultry, as well as meat alternatives. Our meat packaging solutions are appropriate for every kind of meat and poultry. Our solid board packaging is ideal for the moist and cool environment found when packing meat and poultry, and it can be used to pack products that require either chilling or freezing.
Meat packaging must be safe and durable. Hygiene is a very important factor during the slaughter and cutting of the meat. A constant temperature of maximum 4°C during the packaging process is crucial to avoid nucleation.
Paper-based board has properties that makes it ideal for freezing. Solid board has no insulating air trapped in its walls, which speeds up the freezing process of the product it contains. Depending on the choice of packaging and the freezing tunnel used, solid board packaging can reduce the freezing time by 30-50%.
Poultry packaging is typically packed in conditions with high moisture and low temperature, so its packaging must be strong and durable. Our poultry packaging provides optimum moisture control, using either leak proof base or a carefully designed pattern of holes. This way, the products will arrive at their destination in perfect condition.
We provide PE coated and uncoated boxes for direct and indirect food contact. The PE coated boxes provide the advantage of being able to directly freeze products inside them, without any need for additional bags. This is a more sustainable solution, saves time and money and there is no risk of poultry sticking to the box.
For transportation of fresh meat, we supply solid board boxes which are a first-class alternative to returnable plastic crates (RPC). Our boxes are for one time use only, which means optimal hygiene safety and no extra costs for cleaning and returning freight. After use, the boxes can be flattened for disposal. In addition, around 1,000 solid board boxes fit a pallet, which saves storage space in regards to alternative packaging materials.
Meat and poultry can be packaged chilled or frozen, often in humid and low-temperature conditions. The right packaging must therefore provide reliable protection throughout storage, transport and retail.
Transport packaging: Bases & Lids
For secondary and transport packaging, Solidus offers solutions such as Bases & Lids. These can be adapted to different meat and poultry applications, logistics processes and filling methods. They retain their strength and shape in humid and wet conditions and are suitable for storage and transport in cold stores and freezers.
MAP trays
For fresh meat and poultry, MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging) trays provide a fibre-based alternative that helps protect product quality and freshness. The trays can be designed with barrier properties and are suitable for a range of chilled food applications.
Skin packaging
Skin packaging provides a tight, protective seal around the product, helping to keep it securely in place while creating an attractive product presentation. Solidus fibre-based skin packaging solutions can be used for meat and poultry products and offer an alternative to traditional plastic-based packaging.
Food packaging for meat and poultry needs to meet strict hygiene and food safety requirements. At the same time, packaging placed on the European market needs to meet the applicable requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), including requirements related to packaging design, recyclability and waste prevention.
Solidus provides PE-coated and uncoated solid board boxes for direct and indirect food contact. PE-coated solid board is suitable for direct food contact and can be used to freeze meat or poultry directly inside the box, without the need for additional bags. This can save time and reduce material use while keeping the product protected throughout the supply chain.
The right packaging solution depends on the product, filling process and logistics requirements. Solidus can help select a suitable combination of board and liner for your application.
Solid board packaging can help meat and poultry freeze faster because there is no insulating air trapped within the board. This allows the cold to reach the product more efficiently than materials with an insulating air layer.
Depending on the packaging solution, the customer’s packaging conditions and the freezing tunnel used, solid board packaging can reduce freezing time by 30–50%.
Faster freezing can support more efficient use of energy consumption and makes solid board well suited to the storage and transport of frozen Meat and poultry in cold stores and freezers.
For direct freezing of meat or poultry inside the box, Solidus also offers PE-coated solid board packaging. This can remove the need for additional bags and helps prevent poultry from sticking to the box.
Solid board packaging is designed to make efficient use of transport and storage space. Compared with returnable plastic crates, Solidus solid board packaging can take up to seven times less space, helping to reduce transport volume and storage requirements.
The boxes can be supplied flat and flattened again after use, helping to optimise storage and transport. This offers significant logistical advantages, as shown in our meat and poultry portfolio.
Solidus also provides palletising options for Euro pallets and industry pallets, with a preference for inter-stackable formats where possible. This can help customers optimise pallet space, reduce logistic movements and transport more goods per pallet.
Solid board packaging can provide a fibre-based alternative to plastic and returnable packaging options. Our solid board packaging is made primarily from recovered waste paper and after use, it can be collected and recycled through the standard paper recycling process.
The fibres used to produce solid board can be recovered and reused up to 25 times without losing their mechanical or structural integrity. After use, our Meat and poultry boxes can also be flattened for disposal, helping to reduce transport and storage volume.
For fresh meat, solid board boxes can be used as an alternative to returnable plastic crates. As the boxes are designed for one-time use, there are no additional cleaning and return freight requirements. Solidus also offers solutions such as MAP and skin packaging that can reduce plastic content by at least 80% compared with existing plastic solutions.
