Circular ingenuity

Solidus’ circular ingenuity allows us to create innovative packaging materials that promote circularity and minimize environmental impact throughout the packaging lifecycle. We focus on designing packaging made from renewable materials that can be fully recycled at the end of their life (PPWR compliant).

By utilizing renewable and recyclable resources, we help reduce the environmental footprint of our packaging and support companies in transitioning to circular packaging solutions. This ensures valuable materials remain in circulation, decreasing the reliance on virgin materials. By closing the loop on packaging materials, Solidus significantly contributes to waste reduction and the conservation of natural resources.

Our 2023 highlights

Circularity

  • Our packaging materials are made with over 90% recycled fibres, catering to the rising demand for circular packaging solutions.
  • We source post-consumer fibres from local communities. The used paper and board is manufactured into new packaging, fostering local engagement and boosting recycling efforts to drive packaging circularity.
  • We support supermarkets in United Kingdom to switch their mushroom punnets from plastics to solid board, annually saving over 775 tons of plastic and supporting consumers with recyclable packaging materials.
  • We produce and supply supermarkets in Spain and Portugal with packaging for their products, which, at the end of their lifecycle, are recycled into new packaging at our Solidus board mill where they were produced. This process effectively closes the packaging loop and allows these fibres to be reused up to 25 times.
  • Our packaging materials ensure circularity by complying with EN13428 and Design for Recycling (DfR) standards as specified in the PPWR.

Climate

  • Solidus is dedicated to providing carbon-neutral packaging to help customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions. Our Coevorden board mill in the Netherlands is close to being carbon neutral, using wood biomass waste and green electricity for its energy generation.
  • Solidus aims to achieve a 30% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030, targeting a decrease in CO2 emissions per ton of net saleable product, using 2019 as the baseline year.
  • We use Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to design low-carbon packaging, enabling our customers to make sustainable choices.

People & Communities

  • Our commitment to safety has resulted in a 38% reduction in Lost-Time Accidents (LTA) compared to 2022.
  • We aim for at least a 15% annual reduction in Lost Time Accidents (LTA) by expanding our safety awareness program to all employees by 2025 and continuing safety tours and training, reinforcing our commitment to a safe working environment.

Nature

  • We support FSC® and PEFC certification to ensure our packaging wood fibre comes from responsibly managed forests. By choosing certified materials, our customers can show their commitment to sustainability. Wood fibre is a renewable resource that can be replanted, making it a sustainable packaging option.
  • In collaboration with the Trees for All foundation, Solidus has made a significant impact on the Overijssel landscape in the Netherlands by planting 2,600 trees and shrubs.
  • We set the mill target for water intake to not exceed 6m3 per ton of net saleable product from 2024 onwards.
